Resources Technology Showcase: STEM Enterprise Schools Program shows what WA public school students can do
From virtual reality to motorised bicycle races, students and teachers from public schools across Western Australia will show off the fun ways they are learning science, technology, engineering and maths.
The schools are part of the STEM Enterprise Schools Program and will showcase their work at this year’s Resources Technology Showcase.
More than 85 public schools will share what they have learnt in areas such as robotics, virtual reality and combating climate change with students set to display their work over the two days of the event at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Department of Education deputy director general of student achievement Jim Bell said STEM education was preparing children for an ever-changing future.
“STEM education is a very rich area where students develop creativity, problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills. These are all essential skills to make sure our young people are ready for the jobs of the future, even those we don’t know about yet,” Mr Bell said.
In May 2019, the Western Australian Government launched the STEM skills strategy which aimed to build a globally competitive and innovative workforce in Western Australia.
The STEM Enterprise Showcase 2021 is a component of the STEM Enterprise Schools program, which is delivered in partnership with the Department of Education and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
“The STEM Enterprise Schools program is run across 136 public schools, and focuses on building the ability of WA teachers to provide contemporary and meaningful educational experiences to their students,” Mr Bell said.
Student presentations will be live-streamed each day, enabling other public schools to tune in and see students share their experiences and entrepreneurial ideas gained from the program.
The Resources Technology Showcase is free, and is open on June 21 and 22 from 9am – 4.30pm at PCEC.
