An eccentric sense of style and a young female companion by his side — it must be the return of Doctor Who.

This picture shows Ncuti Gatwa in costume as the new Time Lord for the first time alongside the Doctor’s companion, played by 18-year-old Millie Gibson.

And it seems that the producers are returning to the show’s roots when it comes to the Doctor and his sidekick’s wardrobe choices taking centre stage.

Rising star Gatwa, 30, looked like he had taken inspiration from previous incarnations of the Doctor — albeit with a modern twist — in his black and brown chequered suit, orange jumper and brown boots.

In a first in the show’s history, the Doctor also sports facial hair in the form of a moustache. He also wears jewellery, as did the female 13th Doctor played by Jodie Whittaker — but none of her male predecessors.

Sex Education star Gatwa is joined by Miss Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday, who is wearing a denim jacket, blue shorts and chunky black boots.

The pair’s first scenes will air in a year’s time after three specials satrring former Doctor David Tennant to celebrate the show’s 60th anniversary.

The sartorial choices of Doctor Who stars over the years have made their individual portrayals of the character distinctive.

First Doctor William Hartnell dressed like an Edwardian gentleman while third Doctor Jon Pertwee had a Victorian dandy look.

Fourth Doctor Tom Baker was famous for his long scarf.

Tennant’s look as the Doctor – a skinny brown suit, Converse trainers and Jarvis Cocker specs – was often described as ’geek chic’.

His successor Matt Smith wore what would become a trademark bow tie.

Gatwa previously told Radio Times that he had a say in what his Doctor would wear and teased that it would be an ’exciting’ change of style for the Time Lord.
