Before “You shouldn’t do that, you know.” she’ll say, a cigarette littering ash, dangling between her pointer and middle finger. “Do what?” “Bring that wattle inside…” her wrinkled mouth blows out tobacco smoke in the general direction of the window. “What do you mean? It looks nice” You’ll walk around the old laminate kitchen counter, mottled with tea stained rings and burn marks. The stainless steel sink, overflowing with dirty dishes nesting old bread crumbs, and used tea bags. You’ll struggle to get the vase under the running water. “Looks nice, but holds bad omen… Death.”, the wrinkles around her mouth tightening as she traps a cough behind her teeth. “A bad omen and death, is what’s between your fingers, this is just from the tree down the back.” She’ll shake her head, while tapping the cigarette against the glass ashtray you bought her 10 years ago. “I’m going outside if you’re going to keep that wattle in that vase.” “You should be outside anyway, you know the landlord said no smoking.” “Yeah, well he raised the rent another $80 so I’ll smoke inside if I like.” She’ll take a seat at the circular table in the living room, the scuff marks and indentations from your childhood still present on it’s surface. “I don’t think it works like that Gingie. By the way, I paid your electricity bill, I saw it sitting in the mailbox for over a month…” “Let it sit there… Remember when we used to get real mail? Letters, postcards, things other than bills?” she’ll ask “Nope, only mail I’ve ever gotten was bills and a jury duty letter.” “Well, I remember getting hand written letters. Your father used to write me when we first started going out. I had to run to the mailbox as soon as the postie arrived so your grandmother didn’t find out.” For a moment, her voice will sound free of the rasp of old age and cigarettes, and you’ll imagine her; young, healthy, and giddy at the thought of love. “I suppose that’s romantic... Didn’t think Dad was like that.” “He was.” A wet cough will splutter past her lips interrupting the memory. “So. Who won?” “Who won what?” “The court case you got jury duty for.” she’ll bring the half burned cigarette to her mouth, her tobacco stained fingers shaking as the movement strains her. The cigarette burning red as she breathes the smoke deeply. “I ‘spose the police? We found the guy guilty. It was a robbery at a petrol station and he had a knife, demanding money. There was security footage of the whole thing. The sad thing was he was doing it to get money for food - apparently he didn’t have anything to give his kids. It was on the news, you didn’t see it?” Her eyes will hold yours, weighted, she’ll slowly blow the smoke from her mouth. “Nah, I didn’t see anything about a father who was desperate to feed his kids.” “No, I ‘spose not.” “I’m not joking about them flowers. I don’t want them in my house.” her gray hair will jostle forward as she purses her lips towards the vase on the kitchen counter, the cigarette dangling from her mouth. “Gingie, they’re flowers from your backyard, they’re not a bad omen.” “You’re trying to kill me aren’t ya?” she’ll mutter, “‘Carry wattle in, carry someone out’ that’s what my mother used to say.” “Wasn’t she severely allergic to pollen?” “What’s that got to do with anything?” Waving you away, she’ll scrunch her face in indignation. “Go on and make me a cuppa would you, bub?” You’ll walk over and switch on the white kettle, yellowed with age, or perhaps nicotine residue, you can’t tell; both seem as unforgiving as the other. “This is like last month when I put new shoes on the table.” “Shocking bad luck.” she’ll tut “Nothing bad happened.” “The landlord put the rent up $80” standing on shaky legs she’ll walk over to the ragged brown lounge, easing herself down into the chair. She’ll turn the TV on, an old re-run of ’Friends’ will play, the sound muffled and distorted through the old TV speakers. “That’s because we’re in a recession. Nothing to do with the shoes on the table.” “I beg to differ. Thank you, by the way.” “For what?” “The rent increase. Now put them flowers outside.” “Ok. Ok.” You relent, walking around the kitchen counter to the lounge, handing her the cup of tea; white with 3 sugars. “Good. Now I’m going to have to smoke out the house.” “You’re already doing that.” “Don’t get smart,” she’ll say, stubbing out the cigarette on the handle of the remote, “go on, go get me some eucalyptus leaves from that tree out front, while you take them flowers with you.” ~ ~ She’ll take out her red lighter, the label worn and discoloured. “Hold your hands together, and stop moving.” Her thumb will spark a flame and burn into the green leaves. “Don’t worry, I won’t burn down the house.” you’ll say, holding still as to not let the embers fall through the gaps between your fingers. “I’m not worried about the house burning down, I’m worried about getting the bond back.” The initial smell of the smoke will remind you of scorching summer bushfires, when the sun would turn red, of whispered worries, and packing the car ‘just in case’, but as she blows the flame out to a smoulder, the smoke reminds you of something more, something ancient. Reminds you of family, your Aunt’s funeral, every new house you’ve moved to, the ceremonies, the healing, and the protests. “Alright, go on then.” she’ll say, pushing you into the kitchen, urging you on. You’ll walk with your hands held in front of you, like an offering. Up, down, up, down you swing your arms, the smoke swirling, meandering, weaving. Memories flash behind your eyes of the time you ventured into the old sandstone cathedral. A man dressed in a long white robe encrusted with golden thread, swinging a gilded cage, smoke billowing from the tiny prison. Up, down, up, down “Do you really believe in this stuff, Gingie?” you’ll ask, your hands still going through the motions “What stuff?” “The whole evil spirits, bad omens, bad luck stuff” “Do you believe in science?” she’ll bat back “Well, yeah but that’s proven, time and time again. The whole scientific method, testing and peer reviewing.” “My great grandmother, told my grandmother, told my mother, told me - how’s that for a peer review?” “You know what I mean though, don’t you? Doesn’t it sometimes seem a little fantastical?” She’ll sigh, getting up from the lounge and walking over to you. She won’t say anything for a few minutes, you’ll worry that you’ve offended her until she speaks, measured and sure. “Sometimes the fantastical is the most true, the most scientific, the most provable.” she’ll say taking the burning bundle of leaves gently from your hand. Up, down, up, down she moves the leaves. Smoke swirling, meandering, weaving. BeforeYou’ll hear thunder growling through the night sky like a hungry dog, searching and lethal, and her voice will strike your mind, nostalgia more blinding than lightning, she’ll say, “we used to have a Southerly Buster almost every day in summer. You’re lucky to get it 3 times the whole season now!” Then the rain will start to fall - gently at first, then all at once - and you’ll remember the stories she would tell when you were young enough to fear the storms. You’ll remember the feel of her soft hand on your heated brow, the feeling of sheets tucked in around you, the sound of her hushed voice. “When we walk the earth, our spirits walk with us.” she’ll start, “they are with us everywhere, but, they are clever spirits, secretive spirits, so they hide themselves from us. They hide in our shadows, whisper in ears and walk in our footsteps” “Which is why you can’t see their footsteps in the dirt” you’ll interject, sleep thickening your young voice. “Which is why you can’t see their footsteps. But, everywhere we go, our spirits are with us, leaving little signs, little marks that - in the spirit world - glow.” She’ll emphasise the last word through her whisper as though it’s a secret, something important, something to remember. “They use these glowing marks as a map. Marking their way through the world, creating a bright path back to you.” Your eyes will close and your mind will start to hear the story, translating it into pictures in the darkness behind your eyes. “When we sleep our spirits take journeys, they walk around the land, they listen to the spirits in the trees and the sky and those around us, they talk to the sea eagle and the ibis, they laugh with the kookaburra and climb with the goanna, all while we take our rest. When the sun starts to rise, that is when our spirits are called back, and so they follow their glowing marks back to us, back to their home.” Her hand will softly pat a steady rhythm on the crown of your head, each pat making the thunder sound further away. “But, when our sleep becomes too deep to wake from,” she continues, “when our body has taken it’s final rest, our spirits can’t find our body anymore. They follow their glowing paths, searching for their home to no avail. Through days and nights they search, wandering, calling out to our families, calling out to the sun and moon asking, ‘where have you hidden?’.” Her voice quiets, as though she knows you’re on the precipice of sleep. “The spirits become blinded by their glowing marks of you, and are trapped in their glowing map. That is why our family bring smoke, to hide the glow. The smoke covers and clears the glowing spirit lights allowing the spirit to finally see us among the stars and return to us.” She’ll tell you more, but you’ll slip into the oblivion of sleep, wondering if your body has a bright enough glow to bring your spirit back to you. Before You’ll notice her grey hair first, and wonder why it’s looking more thin, a little more rough. She’ll ask if you like her new hair cut, and you do, but you notice that it shows her face a little more. More of her wrinkles, more of the darkening spots and sun damage, you see little red spiderweb veins splotched on her cheek where once a red blush lay. “It’s been too long” she’ll say, and you know it to be true. It has been too long, but only when you’re standing there do you realise that time has shortened, it’s taken on its own meaning. That ‘too long’ for her means more than just time past, but an urgency of time to come. Time left. Leaning in, you kiss her cheek, you bend further down than the last visit. Gravity feels a little more heavy on your back, does she notice it? Does she feel it too? “I want you to do something for me, bub.” She’ll say as you clutch her hand, her breathing laboured and harsh, “I want to see that wattle. Bring the wattle in for me”. You’ll hold her hand, and you’ll watch as the wattle will wilt, as the little yellow flowers will fall to the table. Now The landlord will keep the bond. He’ll say the kitchen counter was too stained, the house smells too much like tobacco, the garden too overgrown and the walls damaged by nails. You’ll feel a possessiveness over these imperfections, they were her stains, her tobacco, her unused garden and her picture hooks. You’ll feel the anger swelling behind your chest, uncontrollable and volatile mixed with the urgency of grief; ’doesn’t he know that was her?’ ’He should be honoured to have those tiny bits of her.’ Still, he will have the work completed, the imperfections patched. The house will feel foreign, almost otherworldly when you walk through the door alone. In one hand the final inspection paperwork clutched between white knuckles and a bunch of eucalyptus leaves in the other. You’ll check through the realestate’s list and sign it before placing it and the keys on the un-stained kitchen counter. Your hand will find her red, label worn lighter in your pocket, flicking it to light. Your tears will sizzle as they splatter on the burning leaves, but still, you will hold your hands out like an offering, smoke swirling, meandering, weaving. Up, down, up, down. Your eye will catch on one of the swirls of smoke, a glimmer of a green glow flickering within its cloudy mist, but disappearing with the haze. Up, down, up, down. You wave the smoke a little harder, a little faster and in every whisp of whirling smoke, tiny green glowing lights flicker, almost a twinkling. You’ll smile, blowing into the smoldering bunch of leaves, enticing more smoke from their burning bellies. The smoke will fill the room, and though your vision should be shrouded, you’ll see clearly, the vivid glowing hand prints permeating the smoke, every wall, every surface glowing with handprints, her spirit handprints. The fire alarm will sound, and with a laugh of disbelief you’ll run to open the door, letting the cleansing smoke out. When you look back into the house, the glowing lights will be gone. The house will be silent. The house will be still. You’ll watch the smoke dissipating through the door; swirling, meandering, weaving.
