Fortescue Metals Group on the lookout for critical minerals in Great Southern with 21 exploration applications

As part of an effort to diversify and transition its business, Fortescue Metals Group has lodged a series of exploration applications across the Great Southern.

The 21 applications made by mining magnate Andrew Forrest’s company include areas in the shires of Gnowangerup, Jerramungup, Broomehill-Tambellup, Lake Grace and Ravensthorpe.

FMG chief executive Elizabeth Gaines said the company was aiming to expand beyond its core iron ore mining operations in the Pilbara by exploring for “critical minerals”.

“Fortescue is transitioning to an integrated, global green energy and resources company,” she said.

“Leveraging our world-leading track record of innovation and infrastructure development, Fortescue Future Industries will position Fortescue at the forefront of the renewable energy industry.

“With our exploration knowledge and expertise, Fortescue continues to explore for critical minerals in Australia and globally through its tenure footprint with a focus on copper, lithium, nickel and rare earth elements.”

The applications were made on on August 1.
