A beach on WA’s south coast has been closed following an interaction between a windsurfer and a three metre great white shark.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development says the shark incident was reported around 4.30pm by a member of the public, following an interaction at Fourth Beach, in the Shire of Esperance, on Tuesday.

The interaction was reported to have occurred between a windsurfer and a 3m white shark.

It is understood the windsurfer was not bitten during the ordeal.

The Shire of Esperance has closed the beach to reduce the threat to people, pending further assessment on Wednesday.

People are urged to take additional care in the waters around Fourth Beach.

“Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA,” the alert states.

If anyone sees a shark they are urged to contact water police on 9442 8600.
