Much-loved Albany mum Nicole Weeden honoured for tireless efforts with Great Southern Service to Sport award

Much-loved Albany mum Nicole Weeden, who died in a car crash last year, was recognised for her outstanding contribution to basketball and netball on Monday. Ms Weeden was honoured as a 2023 recipient of the Great Southern Service to Sport Award by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation. The award recognised her significant volunteer contribution and tireless work behind the scenes in several roles supporting various clubs and associations and was accepted in her honour by her husband Dean and daughters Tayeesha and Shanaya. Albany Basketball Association, where Ms Weeden was heavily involved, posted a tribute saying she will always be remembered as a “superstar of our community”. “Tonight the incredible Nicole Weeden was recognised for her achievements as a local volunteer and outstanding contribution of service to sport in 2022 as part of the volunteer recognition week,” the ABA said. “We were honoured to be with Nicole’s beautiful family tonight as they received this special Award. “Nicole — your commitment, and hard work for the ABA (and to Albany Netball Association) will always be remembered. “You will always be remembered as the superstar of our community.” Basil Worner (2021) and Belinda Ross (2022) are previous recipients of the Great Southern Service to Sport honour.
