Remote-controlled yachts will take over an Albany pond this weekend, with more than 20 boats expected to take part in the State radio sailing championship.

The State championships for the Dragon Force 65 class and Dragon Flite 95 class will have competitors of all abilities race against each other on the pond at the corner of Sanford Road and North Road.

Between 20 and 30 boats are expected to participate in each race across Saturday and Sunday.

Albany Radio Sailing Club commodore Geoff Cass said the event adhered to international yachting rules and would include competitors of all backgrounds and experiences, with some coming from as far as Perth to take part.

“I started three years ago and now I’m the commodore, so I’ve kind of come up the pecking order pretty fast, but I sail three times a week endeavouring to improve — I’d never sailed before, so it’s a big learning curve,” he said.

Mr Cass said a highlight of the race would be the State, national and internationally experienced sailors.

The radio-controlled sailing race will be open to the public to watch.
