WA Election 2025: The Nationals WA candidate for Albany Scott Leary on community, growth and firearms

Why are you the right person for this job? As a proud local for over 33 years, I am deeply involved in our community through volunteering, board service and local sports clubs. These commitments, along with my own experiences, have given me a deep understanding of our region, its opportunities and the contributions we all make. With nearly 27 years running a successful motor vehicle business in Albany, employing hundreds of locals, I bring strong commercial expertise, financial management and leadership. I understand the challenges of driving economic growth and job creation, giving me strong insight into government complexities and, most importantly, the ability to deliver results. What is the most pressing issue facing people in Albany right now? Housing remains a major challenge in Plantagenet and Albany, with limited availability leaving many without stability. To support growth, we urgently need more social, emergency, crisis and specialist care housing, along with general housing to attract new residents and workers. The Nationals have a plan to tackle the crisis. Housing is the foundation of strong communities, which is why we are committing $1 billion to the Regional Headworks Fund to unlock land for development. We will also abolish stamp duty for first-homebuyers, benefiting up to 20,000 new homeowners and easing the path to home ownership in WA. How much money has your party committed to spend in Albany if elected? What are the three biggest projects? The Nationals WA were the first to commit $14 million for Albany Airport upgrades, securing air services, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, firefighting and tourism. To improve regional healthcare, we are investing $400 million in hospital and healthcare facility upgrades. We will also deliver $100 million into the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme, making travel for healthcare — including dental and allied health — fairer and more affordable for regional families. The Nationals WA remain the only party committed to rewriting the flawed Firearms Act. Our commitment to standing with law-abiding firearm owners against Labor remains unwavering. The Nationals WA will deliver practical, balanced legislation that reflect fairness, common sense and community priorities. What is your 10-year vision for the future of Albany? Our region has been overlooked for multiple government terms, with past promises unfulfilled. It’s time to honour these commitments and move forward. We need long-term planning, not just last-minute efforts before elections. Over the next decade, I envision a region where the housing crisis is resolved, sustainable employment thrives, and critical infrastructure — our airport, port, roads and rail — is fully upgraded with secure maintenance funding. Water and energy supplies must also be safeguarded, enabling industry growth that strengthens agriculture and ensures a prosperous future for generations to come.
