Kai McKenzie: Friends and family confirm ‘long road ahead’ for up-and-coming surf star after shark attack

Family and friends of an up-and-coming surf star have revealed the 23-year-old has “a long road ahead” after his leg was ripped off in a terrifying shark attack.

Sponsored surfer Kai McKenzie was enjoying time on the water when he was mauled by a shark off North Shore Beach near Port Macquarie in NSW at around 11am on Tuesday.

Mr McKenzie bravely fought off the predator — thought to be a 3m white shark — escaping when he caught a wave to return to the shore.

Members of the public rushed to his aid, desperately trying to stem the bleeding.

A quick-thinking off-duty police officer used his dog’s leash as an improvised tourniquet.

Mr McKenzie was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

His right leg was completely severed in the terrifying incident and later washed up on the beach. It is understood it was placed on ice before also being transported to the hospital where Mr McKenzie is currently waiting for surgery.

As Mr McKenzie focuses on his recovery, his friends and family have rallied behind him.

Lauren Mac, a friend and neighbour has launched a GoFundMe to support the surfer.

Ms Mac told the Daily Telegraph that loved ones were “devastated”

“It’s another blow after Kai only recently returned to the water after fracturing his neck,” she told the publication.

“His parents are shocked and devastated. I spoke with them yesterday after they saw Kai in the hospital. They are such a tight-knit family.”

“Kai and all his mates have hearts of gold. He’s the type of person that would give you the shirt off his back,” she said.

Ms Mac said it was unclear if Mr McKenzie’s leg might be saved, as specialists were still exploring options as of Wednesday morning.

“They haven’t said yet whether they can reattach his leg,” she said.

“His mum and dad told me it’s going to be a long road to recovery regardless of the outcome.”
