A woman has died during a horror two car crash in the NSW Hunter region, closing a major country road.

The woman died at the scene after the two cars crashed on Denman Road, Muswellbrook at about 5.30pm on Saturday.

According to NSW Police, two sedans collided during the accident.

The female driver of one of the vehicles could not be revived.

Two males and two females, all aged in their 20s, were treated by paramedics.

The accident caused Denham Road to be closed in both directions near the intersection with Edderton Road.

Motorists have been told to find an alternative route and to allow extra time.

Light vehicles can use Edderton Rd and Golden Highway, while heavy vehicles can use the New England Hwy, Lemington Road and Golden Highway.
