Five elderly woman hospitalised in lucky escape after bus and road train collide in scary Great Southern crash

Five elderly people were taken to hospital with minor injuries on Sunday after a scary crash between a bus and road train in the Great Southern. The bus is believed to have had 30 people on board and was travelling on Gnowangerup-Jerramungup Road between Gnowangerup and Jerramungup when the vehicle and a truck collided at about 1.20pm. A large emergency service response was deployed but those involved in the crash had a lucky escape with no serious injuries reported. Police said the incident happened on the border of Toompup and Mindarabin, about 130km north-east of Albany, and on Tuesday released a photo of the bus. The bus had smashed windows down one side and also sustained heavy damage to the front of the vehicle. A St John WA spokeswoman confirmed that five women were taken under normal road conditions to Albany Health Campus. The women, in their 70s, were listed as non-urgent and had only minor injuries. St John WA also confirmed that six crews were in attendance and assessed between 10-15 people at the scene. Officers from Jerramungup, Gnowangerup, Tambellup, Katanning and Albany attended along with Great Southern traffic police. DFES confirmed Jerramungup Volunteer Fire and Emergency Service and Gnowangerup State Emergency Service personnel assisted with the incident. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
