IN PICTURES: Anzac Day dawn service commemorates and celebrates culture, friendship and unity in Katanning

About 300 people came together in Katanning on Thursday to reflect and pay tribute at the Anzac Day dawn service. Among those who stepped forward to lay a wreath at the monument was French Rotary Katanning Club exchange student Gaspard Kania. Mr Kania hails from Aire-sur-la-Lys, a commune in the Ardennes region of Northern France close to the Belgian border. From 1915-1918, the town was used by Commonwealth forces as corps headquarters, and at the Aire Communal Cemetery, 894 soldiers of the Commonwealth rest, including 2nd Lt John Hay of the Royal Flying Corps. He was the only Australian to fall victim to Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron. After the service, the Lions Club put on a hearty and well-attended breakfast at the Katanning Scout Hall.
