Juniors show future of sport ‘looks good’ at Kendenup Tennis Club junior doubles round-robin tournament

Kendenup Tennis Club held a successful junior doubles round-robin tournament on Sunday, with 40 children hitting the courts.

The event, which has been running for more than 10 years, attracted players from Gnowangerup, Kendenup, Mt Barker, Albany and Tenterden.

It was the first junior event of the summer on the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association Events calendar.

Four courts were filled across the day, with enthusiastic kids enjoying the event.

Denby Sharpe and Bryce Galos went through the day undefeated to be crowned A-grade winners over Nicco Lembo and Alec McDonald.

Tea Zizek and Asher Craig were crowned B-grade champions on a countback over Olivia Riggall and Adalyn Sharpe after both finishing with five wins and draw.

However, Zizek and Craig won 33 games to Riggall and Sharpe’s 30.

Skye Lockyer and Zoe Letter went through the day undefeated to walk away winners in C-grade over Ella North and Zoe Tomlinson.

Amy Mitchell and Taleisha Gregory received the sportsmanship award.

Tournament organiser Vanessa Hillman said the junior event was a great success.

“We had an excellent day and to see the development in the players from last year’s tournament, the future of tennis in the Great Southern is looking good,” she said.
