Katanning Wanderers suffer heavy defeat in round one of the Upper Great Southern Football League at the hands of reigning premiers Boddington

Katanning Wanderers suffered an 87-point opening round defeat in the Upper Great Southern Football League, falling to reigning premiers Boddington on Sunday. The Wanderers got jumped by a classy Eagles outfit in the first half, conceding seven goals as they trailed by 38 points at half-time in Boddington. The home side continued on in the second half, as they outplayed the Wanderers to pile on 11 more goals in the second half and run out comfortable winners, 18.17 (125) to 5.8 (38). Caleb Keley was a shining light for the Wanderers booting two goals while Reece Nicholson, Tyrone Roe and Mitchell Banks battled hard. Lewis Gillespie and Nathan Introvinge both booted four majors for the Eagles while Ben Sherry and Matthew White were also influential. Williams began their 2020 season on a winning note at home, outlasting a gallant Wagin outfit. The home side lead by seven points at half-time and then booted three goals to two in the third term to extend their margin to 16 points at the final break. Both sides peppered the scoreboard in the last term and the Bulldogs kicked one more major than their opponent but the Cats prevailed 15.14 (104) to 14.7 (91). Ryan Pearce, Lewis Davis and Jaymi Spinner-Mainstone combined for 10 goals for the victors while Max Paterson and Isaac Christoforou were also strong performers in the win. Andrew Vaswer slotted five majors in the loss with Riley Pokler and Bryn Hamersley named in the Bulldogs’ best players. An eight-goal haul from James Bristow guided his side Wickepin to a commanding 160-point win over Kukerin-Dumbleyung at home in the other round one result. Wickepin finished minor premiers last year before their straight sets finals exit but they started the new season with a bang, leading by 75 points after the first two quarters. In the second half the Warriors piled on 15 goals to two to run out comfortable victors, 28.18 (186) to 3.8 (26). Jayden Brooks starred with five goals in the win alongside Bristow while Kodie Fleay and Rhys Angwin were in the best. The Cougars managed only three goals for the game, two coming from the boot of Kent Patterson.
