Kojonup - Katanning Blue Light committee calls for more volunteers
Kim Briscoe has been volunteering with the Katanning–Kojonup Blue Light committee for the past 22 years and is urging more young people to join the events.
Ms Briscoe said she first attended a Katanning Blue Light Disco event when her daughter was just a little girl.
Now they’ve all grown up and bring their own kids into Blue Light events to enjoy a fun family event.
The Blue Light Association exists to provide youth activities for local and regional communities in conjunction with WA Police.
The association aims to offer a fun environment free from antisocial behaviour, drugs and alcohol.
“I remember going to blue lights when I was a kid — and I’m 48 this year — so it’s been going on in here for a while,” Ms Briscoe said.
“My daughter, she’s what got me into it (volunteering) and we’re still volunteering in blue lights now.”
Katanning police officers also attend the discos to socialise and get to know the local youth.
“The police are on the floors most of the night — they play with the kids and dance with the kids,” Mrs Briscoe said.
“The kids take this opportunity to get to know them on a more personal level.
“It makes them more human I guess — to see the police having fun with them on the floor.”
Ms Briscoe, who often DJ’s during the discos, said she would like to see more local volunteers join the committee.
The next Katanning Blue Light disco event will be held at the Katanning Town hall on Friday, September 8 at 6.30pm. To become a volunteer visit the Katanning Police Station or call 9821 1888.
