Loyal Boxwood Hill trainer Jason Richter nominated for WA Football Volunteer of the Year

The unwavering dedication of Boxwood Hill Football Club stalwart Jason Richter has gained him a nomination for WA Football’s Volunteer of the Year.

Richter will join 16 other finalists in a function prior to the Sandover Medal night at Crown Perth on September 11, where the winner will be announced.

Known around the club as Pistol Senior, Richter has been the Bombers’ trainer for 14 years and aids the reserves and league team with strapping and rub-downs at training and games, while also cooking dinner after Thursday night training.

“I just do what I can to help out around the club, whether that’s strapping the boys, or cooking dinner,” Richter said.

While he provides enormous assistance to the football club, his endeavours are not limited to them.

“The netball and hockey teams come over before our games and so I help them with their strapping and injuries as well,” he said.

Richter said the nomination came as a shock because he loved to “immerse” himself in the club.

“I was extremely surprised when I found out I was nominated,” he said.

“When I was called about it, I thought the person from the WA Football Commission had the wrong number.

“I just love being around the club and when you buy in to the culture and the people here, it just makes it such an awesome place to be.”

Boxwood Hill is one of the only clubs in the state that are not represented by a town, but Richter said that uniqueness makes the club extraordinary.

“People from so many different towns come here and it brings so many people together and that’s what makes the club great.”

Richter was nominated by club secretary Scott Moir, who said they would be lost without him.

“He is always here and has been at the club for as long as I can remember,” Mr Moir said.

“We can always rely on him to bring all the medical gear and he goes above and beyond for the boys.

“He is willing to help out whenever and we are extremely lucky to have him.”

Boxwood Hill plays in the Ongerup Football Association and Richter travels to every away game with Newdegate being the furthest team, nearly 200km away.
