Major crash investigating serious collision after car allegedly failed to stop at Katanning intersection

A 74-year-old Katanning man was flown to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries after a crash at the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Park Street on Friday. Katanning Sen. Sgt Carlos Correia said it appeared a red Mitsubishi Outlander had failed to stop at a stop sign about 5.15pm before crashing into a Holden Astra. The 34-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi and the 74-year-old driver of the Holden Astra were taken to Katanning Hospital for treatment. Sen. Sgt Correia said the 74-year-old was flown to Perth for further treatment. He said the 34-year-old Perth man suffered minor injuries and was helping police with their investigation. “It appears a car has gone through a stop sign and collided with another car at speed,” Sen. Sgt Correia said. “We’ve had a number of complaints about motorists failing to stop at stop signs and it appears to be the case with this crash. Our investigations are ongoing.” On Thursday last week — one day before the crash — Katanning police issued a warning about people who were ignoring stop signs. “We have a lot of people screaming through stop signs at the moment and it’s just not on,” Sen. SgtCorreia said last Thursday. “It is dangerous and we are fearing someone will be seriously hurt. “We will be targeting drivers who are failing to stop.” Anyone with information about Friday’s crash is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
