Plead The Fifth hangs on to claim a thrilling Kojonup Cup at Wandecla Picnic Races
Plead The Fifth took out the 2021 Kojonup Cup (1770m) in thrilling fashion as part of the popular Wandecla Picnic Races last Saturday.
About 700 people turned out to the country venue for the entertaining day trackside, hosted by Kojonup Polo and Polocrosse Club.
The six-year-old mare dropped back from a Saturday metro race the week before to the $7500 country cup feature and prevailed for trainer Catherine Godden and jockey Demi Rose.
Starting on the third line of betting in the six-horse field, Plead The Fifth jumped straight to the front and went very hard out in front to lead by close to 10 lengths with 800m to run.
Turning for home Plead The Fifth led by five lengths before Big Caroline quickly levelled up inside the final 200m and the pair went stride for stride but Plead The Fifth hung on by a half head.
Messiah was back in third more than six lengths behind the pair.
There was a dash for cash race which was split into four divisions, a wheelie bin race, fashions on the field and also a lolly drop for the kids.
Lochy Jones won the men’s fashions on the field prize and Janet Doust took out the women’s contest.
Event organiser Beta Eatt said the day was a huge success.
“There was probably 700 people so we are absolutely stoked with the day,” she said.
“We think it’s probably the best crowd we have ever had, everyone was there for a good time and everyone was courtesy of the kids, it was a fun, safe and friendly environment.
“We were a bit disappointed with the field sizes but the whole day was awesome.
“All the money raised goes to the Kojonup Polo and Polocrosse Club.”
Rose finished the day off with a winning double after guiding the Peter Bamford-trained Greco to a narrow victory in the last race on the program.
Father-son duo Jonathon and Michael Jachmann teamed up to win the first event with Catia while Fandazzle took out race two for trainer Scott Eyre and Kirryn Scallan.
Aaron and Brian Rogers claimed race three with Friar’s Gift.
