Rising Katanning basketball star Megan McKay signs with Townsville Fire sign in the Women’s National Basketball League

Katanning basketball star Megan McKay is set to make her presence felt in the Women’s National Basketball League this season after signing with the JCU Townsville Fire last week. The 193cm power forward returned to WA after enjoying a stellar first season in Germany with TSV 1880 Wasserburg in the Deutschland Damen Basketball Bundesliga. McKay was on track for rookie-of-the-year honours, averaging 16 points and eight rebounds a game before COVID-19 struck. After growing up in Katanning, the 193cm talent also had a successful stint playing for St Mary’s College in the United States. McKay told the WNBL website she was ready to go for season 2020-2021. “I’m really excited to be coming to Townsville and playing back in Australia in the WNBL alongside some of Australia’s top women players for the first time,” she said. “I’m looking forward to helping bring home another championship to Townsville.” Townsville Fire head coach Shannon Seebohm believes McKay can bring a lot to his team. “She is coming off a fantastic rookie season in the top German league,” he said. “She is a strong interior presence and a great rebounder. “She will bring a lot of energy to our team and I am excited to see her play in the WNBL and show what she is capable of.” The Katanning product has represented WA multiple times as a junior while also being part of the Australian Under-17 FIBA Oceania Women’s championship team in 2013. After returning from Germany, McKay had planned on playing for the Launceston Tornadoes in the NBL1 this season but that competition was cancelled, leading to her signing with the Fire for the WNBL season that starts in November.
