Stirling Range a work of art in colourful Gnowangerup mural

A mural showcasing the flora and fauna of the Stirling Range has appeared in an explosion of colour on the walls of Gnowangerup’s IGA.

Wickepin-raised, internationally renowned street artist Jerome Davenport spent 10 days painting the new mural for community group GNP 360.

The artwork was completed last week.

GNP 360 is a community group which has taken the revitalisation of Gnowangerup into their hands.

The mural captures some of the region’s best-known species including the malleefowl, Queen of Sheba orchid and the crested shrike-tit, set against the backdrop of the Stirling Range. The artwork also celebrates the Chamberlain tractor.

Davenport said the painting of the Chamberlain offered a new technical challenge.

“I came from country Wickepin myself and it is always nice to get back to your roots,” he said.

“The positivity and the comments received from the general public were just awesome.”

GNP 360 secretary Cassandra Beeck said the mural could educate visitors about the history of the region.

“This whole building and all the murals are representing our Shire’s ‘X-factor’ which is our Stirling Range National Park,” she said.

“Wildflower watchers come from everywhere to try and find the Queen of Sheba.”
