Kojonup’s Beverley Broom and Shelley Bilney are country week champions after an impressive display at the Manning Bowling Club last month.

The pair were part of hundreds of players from around WA who competed in the women’s country week competition on March 20-25.

Broom and Bilney had a terrific run through the knockout stages of the pairs competition and faced off against Dumbleyung duo Karen Ward and Audrey Bateup in the decider.

The Kojonup duo proved too strong, however, to claim the women’s pairs title.

It came after Broom and Bilney defeated Northampton’s Kaye Burton and Pauline Forrester in the semifinals.

Ward and Bateup reached the final after they downed Busselton duo Karen Gaglia and Robin Tilbrook in the semifinals.

In the quarterfinals Broom and Bilney were convincing 15-9 winners against Eaton’s Judith Davey and Gail Williams.

Burton and Forrester won 18-5 in their quarterfinal over Wagin’s Leanne Cook and Kerry Walker.

Ward and Bateup were dominant 19-8 quarterfinal winners against Cervantes’ Sylvia Glatz and Christine Rennie.

In the quarterfinals Gaglia and Tilbrook edged out the composite team of Angela Bracknell and Dion Delamotte, 11-10.

Gaglia was crowned the women’s singles champion after getting the better of Karyn Bryan from Moora in the decider.

In the semifinals of the singles Gaglia defeated Bateup while Bryan did enough to get past Kojonup’s Paula Reid.

Eaton claimed the women’s fours title after Margaret Mance, Lorrinia Bright, Nola Sutherland and Kerry Ward proved too strong for a composite team from Wickepin and Brookton.

The Wickepin-Brookton combination of Marjorie White, Judy Lang, Val Cliff and Alison Horley fell short in the decider.

Eaton got past the Halls Head team of Patsy Smith, Jill Gumbleton, Marion Brophy and Sue Edwards in the semifinals.

The Wickepin-Brookton team won a thrilling semifinal 16-15 over Narembeen’s Anita Cowan, Sylvia Yandle, Narelle Vaughan and Kellie Mortimore.

At the conclusion of all three events, Busselton were crowned country week champion club, narrowly edging out Kojonup and Eaton.

Points from all three disciplines in the quarterfinals onwards count towards the title and pairs winners Broom and Bilney along with singles quarterfinalist Reid helped Kojonup to second place.
