Katanning’s Len van der Waag’s new-found hobby has helped snap him top prize in this year’s EcoWeek Photo Competition.

Encapsulating the theme of sustainability in action, Van der Waag’s close-up of bees perched on a blooming leek earnt him the People’s Choice Award, while Keisha Lee Fidler was chosen as winner of the young adult category.

“I never really bothered with photography, but my sister bought me a camera recently, and now that I am retired I have the time,” Van der Waag said.

Katanning Landcare district officer Andrea Salmond said there were some beautiful entries.

“Sustainability in action was interpreted by a lot of different people, in a lot of different ways,” she said.

“We had images from worms, to riding bicycles, to chickens, it was fantastic.

“Len’sphoto was beautiful, and very well deserving.”

The competition ran last year for children, but this year’s competition was open to all ages because of the community interest.
