Crowd turn out for Chase

MARK SCOTTGreat Southern Herald

A small but high-quality field was dwarfed by a crowd of 400 people who turned up at the 2013 Narrogin Chase, which was held at John and Doreen Patmore’s property near Cuballing over the weekend.

The 15 kilometre track promised plenty of challenges as it wound its way through open paddocks, including several tighter sections through the trees and rocky outcrops to keep the competitors honest.

Rain threatened much of the weekend but besides a few brief showers the track remained dusty and competitors raced two heats of three laps on Saturday and a further three laps on Sunday morning.

Steven Phillips and Joel Gibbs emerged dusty and victorious on Sunday with his 3.5 litre twin turbo pro buggy.

The top three overall places were the pro buggies, with last year’s Narrogin Chase winner Brad Cooper finishing a close second in his Chevy powered BAT pro buggy.

Darren Agrela won the first State round of the year at Yealering and prologued in the top 10 at the recent Komatsu Brooks Hire Hyden 450 AORC round. He and co-driver Stewart Allen came in third in his Rimco turbo charged pro buggy.

Fourth place went to Harleigh Uren and Daniel Smith in their Nissan Navara, which also placed first in the Extreme 2WD class.

Tim and Shaun Murray took out the Pro 4WD class with Wayne Panomarenko and James Kenneison taking second place.

In the Super 1650s it was Daniel and Alfred Allen taking first place and Alex and Lachlan Cowan second past the post.

Gary and Brody Hayes won the Extreme 4WD and Garry Connell and Garry Whittle took out the UTV class. Organiser Dave Cowan said the weekend was a success and that the track, used for the first time this year, was among the best in Australia.
