Football: Comfortable wins close Round 4

BARRY BUTTERWORTHGreat Southern Herald

Upper Great Southern Football League games came easily for those on the winning side, as several comfortable victories were recorded to complete round four of the season.

On Saturday night, Narrogin belted Wagin by 154 points.

The first quarter provided a good contest with Hawks kicking four goals and Wagin one, with some quick ball movement around the ground promising to offer a much more competitive game.

However, after that Hawks took complete control, booting 23 majors in the final three quarters to finish with a spread of 10 players getting their names on the score board.

Hawks were well served by new recruit Luke Della-Bosca (7 goals) and their two big men Stanley Harrison and Perrin Quartermaine, who finished with four goals each.

Wagin opened up brightly enough and were intent on running the ball quickly at every chance, but unfortunately regular turnovers cost young side as they buckled under pressure. Although they never stopped trying the visitors didn’t have the experience or strength to challenge the Hawks. Out at Boddington the home side returned to winning form with a strong win against Katanning.

Wanderers had the first goal on the board soon after the start of the game but Boddington got their running game going with five goals and Wanderers failed to get their second until just on quarter time.

The second term was fairly even with Wanderers hanging on but it became clear they were going to struggle to hold Eagles out.

The third quarter was all Boddington as the pressure from their midfield and forwards kept the ball inside their attacking area for long periods and persistent offensive pressure forced Wanderers defence to turn the ball over time and again.

Boddington won by more than 10 goals and moved back to equal fourth on the ladder, while the loss by Wanderers relegated them from third place down to sixth.

Kukerin-Dumbleyung blew away Wickepin’s undefeated run with a 63-point win on Sunday. Once again Cougars jumped out of the blocks at the sound of the siren and had six goals on the board by the end of the first term, taking a 30-point lead into the first break.

Wickepin struggled up forward and could only manage one goal to half time. Cougars were well led by player-coach Nathan Ditchburn, who kicked another bag of seven and planted his side in third spot.

Brookton-Pingelly restored a bit more confidence in their form when they held Williams to a 56-point win.

While still suffering a nine-goal loss, Panthers somewhat made amends for a forgettable loss the previous week, working hard against the top side and restricting them to a 13-goal total.
