Hockey's back for winter

KENDALL O'CONNORGreat Southern Herald

Winter sports are coming into full swing and Katanning Hockey Club has begun training.

The club is part of the Central Great Southern Hockey Association which also includes Kojonup, Woodanilling and Tambellup.

Katanning Hockey Club secretary Donna Woithe is excited about the season ahead. “We have had a good turnout to training so far which is promising,” Woithe said.

“The Nyabing team folded so a few players have joined our team.

“We have a lot of new players this year and a new coach, Judy Bride.”

The club is hoping for a stronger year ahead after only winning two matches in the 2012 season.

Woithe said although there was nothing wrong with healthy competition, hockey could also be a social sport.

“Some small towns only have hockey, so it’s also a great social gathering for women,” she said.

The games will start in early May with junior matches held on Saturday mornings and seniors on Saturday afternoons at Katanning Leisure Centre.
