Katanning juniors have perfect day
The Katanning Junior Doubles Tennis Tournament was held at the Country Club last month.
Young-gun Katanning players took on their peers from across the region: Tambellup, Gnowangerup, Kojonup, Lake Grace and Tarin Rock.
Katanning Junior Tennis coordinator Melanie Turner said while competition was fierce, all the players used the opportunity to test the skills they had developed in the past few months.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for players to put their skills to the test against other young players in a competitive, though still fun, enviroment,” she said.
Turner said most of the players had been, and would continue to, engage in weekly coaching sessions with Great Southern Tennis Zone coach Justin McGuire, who coaches about 200 young players in the region.
“With the mild weather, playing conditions were near perfect and the kids really enjoyed the day, which was the most important thing,” Turner said.
In the 14-and-under boys’ competition, the winning team was Travis Abbott and Morgan O’Halloran, and the runners-up were Alex Altus and James Gonzales.
In the same age group, the girls’ competition was won by Anna Hunt and Emma Naisbitt, and runners-up were Tamia Schinzig and Tennika Gibbs.
The 12-and-under boys’ winning team were Ted Batchelor and Kaine Cristinelli, followed closely by Bradley O’Neill and Blake Watkins.
The girls’ competition was won by Fleur Harrison and Kelsie Wright, and runners-up were Sally Rundle and Daisy Flugge.
In the 10-and-under girls, the winners were Abbey Cristinelli and Kiara Wright, and runners-up were Bridgette Wilson and Daisy Elliot.
In the boys’ competition in the same age group, Boston Cavanagh and Declan Georgy took out first place, followed by Lachlan Byrne and Levi Knapp.
Showing some promising young talent, the eight-and-under competition for the girls was won by Taylor Warren and Jasmine Butterworth.
The winners in the eight-and-under boys’ section were the energetic Hamish Bolto and Oscar Bride.
