Katanning police are urging the public to double check their home and car doors are locked after an increase in crime in the town.

During the May-June period, crime went up 70 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Jewellery, laptops, iPads and cash have been the main targets, with police investigating 15 reports of car break-ins in May.

Half of the cars broken into were left unlocked by their owners.

Sergeant Lindsay Pankhurst said police were calling on the public to notify them of any suspicious activities.

"We need the public to be extra vigilant; take note of where they see suspicious behaviour … make sure doors are locked and don't leave valuables in cars."

Katanning police have also been targeting speeding as part of a Statewide campaign in the lead-up to the school holidays.

Acting Senior Sergeant Graham Black said driving under the influence and driving tired could make a deadly combination.

"Alcohol is one of the three major contributing factors in fatal and serious crashes in WA," he said.
