Ideas for future changes on Kojonup's main street took centre stage last week and now the Shire of Kojonup is looking for public comment on the plans.

Ideas presented in the plans include developing a town square, closing the section where Jones Road intersects Albany Highway to create more pedestrian space and utilising a portion of the Co-op car park as public space.

Concept plans were developed by architecture and design company Hames Sharley, who noted the high number of heritage buildings along the main street and Kojonup's proximity to Perth and Albany.

They were presented at a community breakfast hosted by the Shire last Thursday.

Shire president Ronnie Fleay said a master plan was needed to "give some life" to the main street.

"You want your town to be an attractive place that people come into where people want to stop by and have a look around," she said.

"We want to try and to connect our town because it is a really long main street, so you want to draw people in to explore the whole area, not just one little section."

Concept plans for the main street master plan are now out for public comment until October 24.

"We needed an overview of what the community wants our town to look like, whether it's businesses or community or Shire," Cr Fleay said.

A more detailed plan will then be drawn out, taking the ideas from council and the community on board and will then become the master plan.

The plans can be downloaded from the Shire of Kojonup website.
