Broomehill Primary School has an extra reason to celebrate the Christmas holidays.

Year 7 student Amber Guerini has won the the prestigious Vi Barham Award for Excellence.

The award, presented earlier this month by the Vi Barham Award Board of Trustees at Narrogin Local Education Office, recognises the achievements of Year 7 students from 28 primary schools and district high schools that make up the Upper Great Southern Education District.

Broomehill Primary School principal Michelle Holmes said Amber’s achievements made her a positive role model for other students.

“She has excelled all through her schooling and Broomehill is extremely proud of her achievements,” she said. “She is very creative and she likes maths, she’s a bit of an all-rounder.”

Mrs Holmes said the school encouraged students to have diverse interests.

Finalists were selected based on performance in standardised testing covering literacy and numeracy, and were interviewed by the Vi Barham Board of Trustees.

The 10 finalists included Cody Crooks from Braeside Primary School, David Hallam from Kulin District High School and Lakeisha Mills and Meg Whittington from Pingelly Primary School.

Finalists received prize money, a certificate and a trophy.

The award was named after long-serving Narrogin District Education Office staff member Vi Barham who demonstrated the academic qualities and community-minded attitude the office inspires in students in the district.
