More than 1000 litres of diesel leaked as truck attempts to fill fuel tank at Katanning service station

There was a major fuel spill that needed emergency services and local shire employees to help clean up in Katanning on Wednesday. More than 1000 litres of diesel spilled from a fuel storage tank in Katanning as a road train was attempting to fill the tank. The spill miraculously avoided the nearby road and contaminating a storm water pipe by just metres. Crews from Katanning Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service responded to a triple-0 call at 10.10am on Wednesday, September 20 at the Shell service station on Bay Street. The Shire of Katanning also attended the emergency and spent more than four hours dropping 50 cubes of sand on the area to restrict the spill. The service station remained open however they were not selling any fuel in the hours after the incident. The leak comes just one week after a new storage tank was installed at the facility, owned by Liberty Oil Australia. The cause of the spill is still being investigated by ISS First Response and fuel equipment specialists Nqpetro.
