Premiership players out in force

Members of the Katanning Wanderers’ 1967 and 1968 premiership teams gathered last weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion.

The reunion dinner was held after a solid win by the present-day Katanning Wanderers over Boddington, with both sides guaranteed to play finals this year.

Twenty-five players from the 1967-68 league and reserves teams attended the event with their partners to reminisce and share stories over dinner at the Katanning Country Club.

Organiser Peter Kerin said one of the most-shared memories during the reunion was the hail storm that stopped the 1968 grand final, where five people were taken to the hospital with hypothermia.

The game was abandoned and had to be replayed the following week.

Club president Dom Laurino also attended the reunion to thank past club members and to share his vision for the club and how successful they had been during this premiership campaign.

Ben Quartermaine whose family has been associated with the club since its inception also joined festivities last Saturday to congratulate and reminisce together with past members of the club.

Mr Kerin also organised a slide show for the reunion, for members to enjoy a compilation of Herald articles of Katanning Wanderers’ games from the past 50 years.

“Past players from many parts of the State had a very memorable evening,” he said.

“It was also an opportunity to toast and remember the five former players who are now deceased and several who were unable to attend due to ill health.”
