Show introduces agriculture to kids

With more free and interactive events available and a record number of exhibitors participating, it’s easy to see why organisers of the 123rd Katanning Agricultural Show hailed the event as a success.

Last Saturday about 4600 people walked through the gates of the Katanning Leisure Centre grounds for a day of rides, show bags, dog jumps, art and craft and much more.

Numbers were up from last year’s figures by about 330.

Attendees were kept entertained all day from Malay Drummers in the morning to fireworks and speed shearing to close the iconic event.

Katanning Agricultural Pastoral and Horticultural society president Leisha Wood said the show was “an amazing day”.

“From the crowds we have had coming through to the amount of exhibitors we’ve had, it’s been phenomenal,” she said.

“Our free entry for kids under 12 is very important, along with the free entertainment that has been popular.

“It goes to show you don’t need to put your hand in your pocket to have a great day out.”

Newly appointed councillor of the Royal Perth Agricultural Society Bruce Mullen said it was the first time he had been to the show since he was around 10 years old.

Dr Mullen highlighted the importance of promoting agriculture at shows, especially to young people.

“I have always had an interest in shows. Today there are fewer farmers around to put exhibits in and you have got to attract people to attend shows in more ways,” he said.

“That’s my passion — educating young people about agriculture. It’s important and you can’t take it for granted.”

Equestrian events steward Glenys Maydew has seen an increase in young people take part in competitions in her filed.

“Some of these kids have never been near a horse up until a few months ago,” she said.

“It’s great to see them participating. They are the future after all.”
