Squash champs come as twins

Great Southern Herald

Three sets of twins were among the competitors vying for the Ausgold Squash Championships at the Katanning Country Club at the weekend.

Kieran and Khallon Zilm, Nick and Devan Marino and Fiona and Louise McCarley were among the 32 competitors in the men’s, women’s and juniors Ausgold Squash Club Championships.

Unfortunately the Zilms met each other early on in the competition, with Kieran overcoming Khallon to progress to the next round.

Nick and Devan Marino vied for the junior A grade championship, with some fantastic squash and a competitive streak to the fore. Devan was the eventual winner of the match, 9-6 9-6 8-10 9-4.

The women’s championship final saw the McCarleys playing each other.

In a closely fought match, with both girls playing some of their best squash, Louise eventually overcame Fiona to win 9-6 9-5 2-9 10-8.

The men’s A grade final was truly a match to witness, with the Katanning Squash club’s number one and number two players vying for the club championship.

It was a closely fought competition which came down to the final minutes of the game.

Ricky Marris took out the championship over Ashley Clarke, winning 9-10 9-4 4-9 9-5 10-8.
