Katanning's Kade Stewart proved he is a player to watch after highlighting his potential at the 2015 NAB AFL National 18s Championship.

Competing against South Australia, Victoria Metro and Victoria Country, Stewart, alongside North Albany's Declan Mountford, was among the WA State 18s team that fell short of victory in their final division 1 match against Victoria Country 11.6 (72) to 7.12 (54) on July 2.

Stewart stood out across the six rounds.

In their round 4 match against Victoria Metro, WA were defeated by 74 points but Stewart battled hard with 15 possessions and eight clearances.

In their second encounter in round 5, WA claimed an 18-point win, with Stewart collecting 13 disposals and snapping a goal after the siren to cement the win.

Coach Andrew Lockyer said Stewart played well in the first game but fitness caught up to him during the second.

"Three out of the six games weren't there, but that's what they all have to learn; players need to put that competiveness in the entire way through the comp," he said.

"Country players often have an advantage because they are exposed to senior bodies early and that paid off."

Stewart said the squad eventually found their feet as the championships progressed.

"I think because the WA team started a bit later the first game and first trial matches were rough, but once we started playing together we gelled, and Melbourne was exceptional, the best we've all played together," he said.

Stewart played his first game for South Fremantle reserves on Saturday, for 10 disposals and six clearances.

Lockyer said their opportunities started now because AFL recruiters would be looking at their performances.
