Students spring into trees

KENDALL O'CONNORGreat Southern Herald

Year 7 students at St Patrick’s Primary School made the most of the spring weather on Friday, September 6, when they teamed up with Katanning Landcare to plant trees.

The activity was part of National Tree Planting Day, which was officially held in July, but due to poor weather conditions the local event was postponed.

Several native species of trees including eucalyptus and melaleuca have been planted in farming land and around the Lake Ewlyamartup recreation area.

St Patrick’s student Sharni Karakizyan found the tree planting event an exciting excursion.

“It was a great time spending time with my friends and helping the environment at the same time,” she said.

Katanning Landcare’s new district manager Andrea Salmond was impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the students.

“They worked a lot faster than we thought,” she said.

“When they come out to the area years from now and see all the trees they will be able to say ‘that’s the tree I planted’.”
