Warm Katanning welcome for cyclists

JOE CASSIDYGreat Southern Herald

Cyclists travelling from Albany to Perth to raise funds for the Cancer Council were greeted in Katanning with sunshine and warm hospitality.

The team of 10 riders and their support crew stayed the night at Kobeelya. They hope to raise nearly $20,000 from their ride.

The group were welcomed to town by local Ashley Brokenshire, who sold doughnuts and collected donations to contribute to the cause.

“We went up there and fed them all,” he said.

“All of us have been touched by cancer, either personally, or someone we know. If we can get more research for a cure and find some answers, then it will be better for everyone.”

The ride, in its fourth year, has raised more than $50,000 for cancer research, not including the total for this year, which is still being tallied.

Organiser Rodney Olsen said the ride went off without major incident. He found meeting a local who shared his personal stories inspiring.
