Shire secures land to complete ‘missing link’ in Cathedral Avenue Shared Path project
A South West shire has secured the land to complete the missing link in a major shared path, now moving on to the next steps of the project.
The Shire of Harvey voted to secure a portion of land in Leschenault to complete the Cathedral Avenue Shared Path project giving locals and visitors a clear path along the estuary from Old Coast Road to the Collie River.
With a small grove of paperbark trees intersecting the path’s journey, the council has not been able to complete it without altering the initial route into private land or removing the trees.
Councillors voted in favour to secure 4502sqm of private land to complete the missing link at a price of $65,000.
If the land acquisition is successful, the shire plans to build interpretive signage and seating.
The path’s overall development is being support by the Department of Transport which is paying for 50 per cent of the project with the shire paying the remainder.
Shire president Michelle Campbell said the completed path would be a major benefit to the community.
“It’s a great outcome for the community and for the tourists visiting the Harvey region as well,” she said.
“It’s a lovely walk along the Leschenault Estuary, so a safer path for both cyclists and walkers will be perfect.”
The vote to buy the land was passed at last week’s council meeting 8-1 with only Cr Robyn Coleman voting against the move.
