Prosecutors are expected to push for an immediate jail sentence for an elderly man following his admission to possessing a large volume of child exploitation material.

Michael Terence Trainer has pleaded guilty to knowingly be in possession of child exploitation material and his sentencing process kicked off at Adelaide District Court on Friday.

Stephanie Moore, for the prosecution, indicated to judge Ian Press that the “sheer volume” of images found in Trainer’s possession meant the prosecution would consider arguing for time in prison.

A community victim impact statement is also likely to be tendered in the case.

Outside court, Trainer appeared surprised to be photographed and filmed following his appearance.

“What is this for?” he asked.

Trainer will next appear in court on April 22 for sentencing submissions.
