Kalgoorlie Dental Surgery’s historic Dugan Street building receives heritage funds for renovations

Funds have been granted to help renovate a heritage building that has stood in Kalgoorlie-Boulder for more than 125 years. The structure at 45-47 Dugan Street is among the successful recipients of funding under the State Government’s 2024-25 Heritage Grants Program. Owners Melanie and Derek Fowler, who operate Kalgoorlie Dental Surgery at the site have been given a $55,000 grant to help fund repair works. Mr Fowler said the building was the last remaining of four residences of its kind which were built on the street in the late 1890s. “It’s in largely good repair, and I guess our ambition is to restore it to its former glory,” he said. “Then to have a beautiful practice and something the public can come and appreciate as well.” Mr Fowler said since taking ownership, extensive renovations had taken place to help modernise the interior while maintaining the building’s historic value. “There are very few buildings of this status and structure remaining — they have become quite rare,” he said. “I think the history is valuable, I think Kalgoorlie is a pretty amazing place. “This building demonstrates a slice of history as a great example of what was, and what still is.” Announcing the grant recipients, Heritage Minister David Templeman said he was “thrilled” with the response to this year’s program. “The record number of applications highlights the community’s deep connection to our heritage and the importance of preserving it for future generations,” he said “The Cook Government is committed to supporting these valuable projects, which not only conserve historic places, but also tell the rich stories of our State’s past. “From Broome to Albany, these projects will ensure that future generations can continue to experience and learn from Western Australia’s unique cultural and architectural heritage.”
