A house has been engulfed in flames in Northam, prompting a warning for people nearby to stay inside.

Firefighters were called to a house fire on Morrell Street near the intersection of Rockett Street, Northam just before 9pm on Tuesday.

Morrell Street has been closed as firefighters work to put out the blaze.

The house fire is causing smoke to be blown in a northerly direction towards the Avon River.

As a precautionary measure, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services have urged people in the area to remain inside with doors and windows closed.

Air-conditioners should also be switched off.

People are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
