Clive Street's new look is starting to take shape with the reopening of the Katanning main street.

According to director of engineering services Uwe Striepe, businesses along the main street have been kept informed about the ongoing works through weekly email updates.

Parking is now possible along one side of the street - the other side will remain closed to allow for construction of paved parking and sidewalks.

Trees and lighting are also due to be installed.

Shire deputy president Robert Godfrey said it was "exceptionally pleasing" to be able to reopen Clive Street to vehicle traffic again late last month.

"The Clive Street upgrade and roadworks have been a very difficult job to complete and there were many unforeseen problems that were encountered along the way," he said.

"It was basically the first time in 100 years that there has been roadworks of this scale carried out on Clive Street, and there were many services to avoid and also there were all the disused services that were left in the ground over the years, and this causes many additional problems.

"We acknowledge that there has been a lot of frustration from the business community and the general public over the time it has taken to complete the roadworks."

Bakehouse Boutique manager Dianna Paini said her business was "flat out" the day after the street opening.

"A lot of people are now passing through to look at the work going on; they then stop by into the shops now, so that's good," she said.

"The last two weeks were really quiet, but today (Monday) we were busy - it's really good.

"I'm hoping it's going to look up now; I was always optimistic but it has been a little frustrating on how long it has taken."
