Rhys Hamilton smashed his way into two Lakelands homes in broad daylight so he could go to jail with mates

A Mandurah man committed two terrifying daylight burglaries “because all his mates were in jail” and he wanted to join them, it was revealed in court on Friday. Rhys Hamilton, 20, pleaded guilty via videolink from Casuarina Prison at Mandurah Magistrates Court to two counts of home burglary and two counts of stealing. Hamilton had been out of prison just three months when a fight with his girlfriend sent him into a spiral in August this year. Police Prosecutor Sen. Cons. Jessica Anderson told the court that Hamilton’s offending began at 9.36am on August 26 when he broke into two neighbouring Lakelands homes by smashing through their sliding doors. One of the homeowners was awakened by the sound of glass and got out of bed to find Hamilton standing in his home. Hamilton stole his wallet — containing $250 cash and cards — and also stole a wallet and cards from the neighbour. He was caught on CCTV leaving the scene wearing a “distinctive” outfit. Police pulled over a car at 10.19am and identified Hamilton, who was sitting in the passenger seat, by this outfit. Duty lawyer Clare Hay said Hamilton began accumulating offences from childhood. “The only mates he has are in jail,” she said. The 20-year-old had kicked his drug habit when he was released from prison in March this year. She asked that Hamilton be given the minimum sentence given his young age and the fact he had been remanded in a maximum security prison since August 26. Magistrate Leanne Atkins disagreed and sentenced Hamilton, who was a third strike offender, to three years in prison. He will be eligible for parole and the term was backdated to August 26. She told Hamilton people should be able to go about their business without someone breaking into their home. “A person was woken by the sound of glass smashing, they should be able to be at home at any time and feel safe,” she said. “When stealing those wallets, you’ve caused inconvenience and concern their accounts would be accessed.”
