Steggles incident: Two workers taken to hospital after ‘trailer full of chickens’ tips, WorkSafe investigating

WorkSafe is investigating an incident where two workers were taken to hospital after a trailer full of chickens tipped at an Osborne Park hatchery this week. The West Australian understands the pair were near a trailer being pulled by a prime mover before it tipped at the Baiada Poultry Steggles facility on Howe Street just after 5am on Monday. St John WA were called to the incident before two men in their 30s were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It is understood the facility alerted the regulator to the incident, but an investigator has yet to formally attend the site. It is believed the trailer was either on, or being pulled, towards a weighbridge at the time. The two workers aren’t believed to have been struck by the trailer, but were instead injured while they were positioned in an adjacent shed. Several chickens were inside the trailer at the time and it is believed they were inside cages when it tipped. The West has contacted Baiada Poultry for comment. The incident comes after a run of workplace incidents across WA, including two deaths last Thursday. Peter Groves, 29, was killed following a “site incident” at Saturn Metals’ Apollo Hill gold exploration project near Leonora. Mr Groves was an employee of Boulder-based Challenge Drilling for the past seven years. And around 1pm last Thursday a 69-year-old man was fatally crushed by a brick and concrete wall at a home demolition site in Inglewood. The man who died was understood to be the father of the homeowner. A 26-year-old man was also crushed, but managed to survive his injuries after being rushed to hospital.
