A group of Katanning Senior High School students are busy sewing, painting and weaving their way into an annual competition that could result in their designs being showcased in the city and beyond.

The Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards gives students the chance to demonstrate their creative side in an annual fashion design competition.

Year 10 student Grace Ivankunda is in the midst of working on her Burundi-inspired outfit.

"It comes from my culture - my parents are from Burundi," she said.

"I also love being creative so this was a great program to get involved in," she said.

Grace is one of 11 KSHS students entering the competition.

Apex and the art department are currently fundraising in order to purchase materials to make the outfits. Apex president Matthew Pech said the competition was a great opportunity for the students to potentially launch themselves into the fashion industry.

"It would be great to see the community get behind these students and the teachers involved," he said.

The competition's first heat will be held in Wagin in September with the State final planned for the Hyatt Regency Perth.
