Zilm named State netball hero
Katanning's Mikayla Zilm will wave the flag for WA after becoming the State winner of the 2014 Telstra Netball Hero Award.
The 19-year-old is president of the Olympians Netball Club and has long been involved in Katanning's sporting community.
The Telstra Netball Hero Award highlights the contribution individuals make to the netball community in their region.
Zilm said it was a surprise to be named the State finalist.
"There are a lot of people in this town that could be recognised for this award, it's exciting," she said.
"Netball is something I really enjoy and being nominated for something I enjoy is a bonus."
Fellow teammate Caitlyn Fitzgerald nominated Zilm for the award because of her commitment to the game.
"Mikayla is a young player who has stepped up to not only coach at a senior level but take on the club presidency to make sure the club runs smoothly," she said.
Zilm also plays squash and basketball and highlighted the importance sport plays in regional towns such as Katanning.
"Sport is a big driver in this town, many social and family events revolve around it," she said.
"Getting involved is my way of giving back to the community."
As the State finalist, Zilm was awarded a local netball club grant of $500 for the Olympians club.
Fitzgerald said the financial support could go to purchasing new equipment and uniforms.
Zilm is among seven finalists from across the country in the running for the national title, which will be announced on August 21.
The national winner and their nominator will receive tickets to their closest State team gala dinner, a $1000 netball club grant and a signed team shirt.
