Tony Burke has refused to listen to business concerns about his controversial new industrial relations laws, instead preferring to shut down criticism. But he was forced on Thursday to listen to his political rivals as they put the brakes on his overly ambitious plans. The IR Minister’s preference to rush it all through as one big package took a major hit when the crossbenchers in the Senate voted to split his omnibus Bill. Jacqui Lambie and David Pocock secured support to carve out — and then pass — a suite of worker-protection provisions included in the Closing Loopholes Bill. As Burke was faced with that setback, a new survey revealed small business ranks the IR shakeup a more pressing threat than cyber security, natural disasters and the struggle to find staff. Burke may seem confident to stare down the likes of the big miners when fighting for his changes but how will he feel about taking on family-run businesses? Council of Small Business Organisations Australia CEO Luke Achterstraat is correct when he says the proposed new laws are a “litmus test” for politicians on their understanding and support for small businesses. Burke is making some side deals and there’s talk of concessions but that only adds to the confusion he is creating and it’ll be smaller companies unable to absorb the changes that are most impacted. Is that fight what Anthony Albanese needs right now as he battles the perception he’s out of touch with the real concerns of everyday Australians?
