The Ferret: if volunteer firefighters are willing to put their lives on the line, then AFL players can strap on their boots to raise money for a good cause

And with the Liberal Party today revealing a host of preselection candidates across 11 seats, it’s worth remembering that you heard them all first in this column. The Ferret predicted months ago that Rio Tinto lawyer Scott Edwardes would put his hand up for the seat of Kingsley. Scott is significant because he’s the son of Cheryl and Colin Edwardes (Cheryl being a former Cabinet minister and Colin a party stalwart and current chief of staff to WA Liberal leader Liza Harvey). I also predicted the very pro-Roe 8 Nicole Robins, who unsuccessfully ran for the seat of Fremantle at the Federal election, would put her hand up for the seat of Bicton. And I’m not going to stop at that. The Ferret can bring you another exclusive. I’m hearing that former WA Police union president George Tilbury could be a candidate in the marginal seat of Forrestfield (whose preselection candidates are yet to be announced by the Liberal Party). They lost the seat in 2017 to Labor’s Stephen Price. Tilbury was the union boss from 2012 to 2018. At 39, he was the youngest president in the 100-year history of the WAPU. In his farewell speech, he said that during his reign the union had “a number of incredible improvements” such as “mandatory sentences for offenders who evade police, mandatory blood testing for offenders and closing the loophole which saw offenders given parole and not serve the minimum mandatory sentence for assaulting a police officer”. Tilbury’s LinkedIn profile says he’s been a copper for 29 years, including senior stints in Kalamunda and Midland and with the Police Rail Unit. FYFE’S UP FOR A FIRE FIGHT There's been lots of talk about whether our footy stars should be risking pre-season injury to play in the State of Origin Bushfire Relief match late next month. The Ferret reckons that if volunteer firefighters are willing to put their lives on the line, then the least our AFL players can do is volunteer to strap on their boots for a kick to raise money. So it was welcome news when I was told yesterday that the league’s best player and Dockers captain Nat Fyfe is a certainty to play. The Ferret knows for a fact that Fyfe, Michael Walters and Joel Hamling have been put forward by the club to pull on the boots for the Allies. Meanwhile, Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra and Matt Taberner have been put forward for the Vics. The only thing that would stop any of them from playing is an injury between now and match day (which is Friday, February 28). AMBER LIGHT FOR ELLENBROOK RAIL Spare a thought for Amber-Jade Sanderson. The rising star of the Labor Party and MP for Morley (whose calm demeanour and sure-footed work on the assisted-dying legislation impressed everyone) has copped the raw end of the Metronet stick it would seem. A source of a source of a source has handed the Ferret a list of what the McGowan Government considers the “risks for consideration” regarding its much-trumpeted new 21km Morley-Ellenbrook railway line. Among the issues it’s told boffins to be aware of is “community stakeholders unhappy with route alignment not serving Morley centre”. You wouldn’t want to be the local MP trying to explain that to local small businesses desperate for visitors. Among the other 29 “examples” of problems put on the table are a lack of resources to hit the project timeline, Public Transport Authority red-tape, traffic congestion for local roads and “action groups getting traction”.
