The Ferret: New death laws could end McGowan government; and how would Bill Shorten have managed the bushfire crisis?

FOR PARK’S SAKE AT 6PR A Walkley nomination. The WA Media Award for best columnist thanks to his work with The Sunday Times. And an all-round nice guy. Yet the Ferret hears none of this was enough for Gareth Parker, not to be shoved somewhat to the side at 6PR as part of a shake-up to its line-up. It’s understood that Parker’s morning show will now be starting 30 minutes later than usual when he returns from the festive break. The 9am start time for Parker means Basil Zempilas and Steve “Millsy” Mills will have the entirety of what’s considered the station’s prime time audience from now on. That’s despite the fact Parker has won 17 out of his 19 surveys against the ABC and every ratings race in 2019. Not to mention his editorials kicking off from 8.30am have become an institution for commuters and pollies, who froth more than a Gordon Street Garage latte to appear on his first half-hour. IT COULD BE THE DEATH OF YOU, MARK You only need to watch Scott Morrison’s media team fumble their way through a national bushfire catastrophe to appreciate just how well managed the Mark McGowan team is locally (and that’s even when senior staff members are resigning over Christmas party behaviour and an Upper House Labor member married to a Cabinet minister is refusing to do what the Attorney-General wants). The fact the WA Premier managed to pull off the “most liberal euthanasia laws in the country” with barely any blowback is a testament just how hard McGowan will be to topple come 2021. But the Ferret can also reveal the bizarre set of circumstances that shows how the death laws could … well … spell the death of Mark. Success has many parents (and failure none, of course), but when everyone was patting each other on the back for passing Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation, two names were strangely missing. One was a long-time Liberal media guru called Joey Armenti, who had ironically been running the VAD campaign behind the scenes. Joey has an almost unbeaten track record steering the WA Liberal Party to victories at elections and by-elections both State and Federal. Armenti was personally called to manage the euthanasia campaign by Andrew Denton in September 2018 and essentially put his private practice on hold to take on the job and help out his bitter rivals in Labor. In the early stages, the Ferret understands that Armenti was so hands-on he was even meeting with groups as far-ranging as the Country Women’s Association to ensure they were on board. What is also interesting is that Armenti’s right-hand person on euthanasia was Linda Oshalem from Newgate Communications (the other person who didn’t seem to get any public kudos). Before becoming an associate partner at the communications firm, Linda held the position of assistant State Labor secretary for five years from 2012-17 and was crucial in securing Mark McGowan’s election win. She was also on the six-person council that recently reported back on how Federal Labor got it so wrong at the May 18 poll. So on one level VAD was also a story of how two of the best political minds from either side came together for the greater good. With Joey now free and having bolstered his already considerable political nous by working side-by-side with the woman who helped get McGowan elected, one would think it’s only a matter of time before Liza Harvey starts him working on her campaign strategy. And now knows the inner workings of the Labor Party. IMAGINE (FOR A SECOND) BUSHFIRE BILL Politics is a fickle business and it’s amazing how many sliding doors moments there are. File this little snippet under the Ferret-isn’t-breaking-a-yarn-just-sharing-an-opinion, but you can’t help but wonder that if Bill Shorten had actually won the unloseable election then the current east coast bushfire crisis is the kind of thing he would have been very good at prime ministering (if that’s a word). For all his faults, Bill is a politician who can get down and dirty on the frontline and invoke sincerity while doing so. While ScoMo is doing his best to make up for the massive political misjudgment that was Hawaii and Albo is trying too hard (in my mind) to score points, you can’t help but wonder if Bill would have been very capable as the nation’s leader for this particular crisis.
