WA’s Matthew Ramsden missed qualifying for the Men’s 1500m final by just a third of a second.

Making his Commonwealth Games debut, the 25-year-old ran during the second heat of the Men’s 1500m where he found himself up against some stiff competition including England’s Matthew Stonier, Kenya’s Abel Kipsang and Scotland’s Jake Wightman.

Fellow Australian Stewart McSweyn was also due to run in the same heat but did not start.

During the early stages of the run, Ramsden found himself towards the back of the pack, eighth at the 400m and 800m mark.

Although he dropped to ninth at the 1200m mark, Ramsden made a solid challenge for a top five qualifying spot but was pipped at the post by New Zealander Samuel Tanner.

Ramsden finished with a time of 3:48.98, just 0.33 seconds behind Tanner and leaving him out of the final.

The chances of an Australian winning a medal will fall on Oliver Hoare, who was the fastest qualifier after placing first in heat one with a time of 3:37.57.

The 1500m final will take place on Saturday.
