England limited-overs captain Jos Buttler is a major doubt for the upcoming T20 series with Australia after withdrawing from The Hundred due to a calf injury.

The 33-year-old's future as England's white-ball captain has recently come under scrutiny following two disappointing World Cup title defences, with Matthew Mott standing down as coach earlier this week.

The three match T20 series against Australia begins on September 11 at Southampton before moving on to Cardiff two days later and concluding in Manchester on September 15.

That is to be followed by a five-match one-day international series.

Buttler had been due to captain Manchester Originals in the fourth edition of the The Hundred.

In his absence, the Originals have lost their opening three matches in the competition, which runs until August 18.

Buttler said on Instagram: "Gutted to be missing The Hundred this year. Best of luck to Manchester Originals for the rest of the campaign. Working hard to be 100 per cent fit asap."
